Course Objectives and what you'll learn

What the Integration Looks Like

Describe the complementary neurophysiological and clinical functions of neurofeedback and DBR in trauma treatment, including arousal regulation, orienting tension, shock, dissociation, and network integration.

Supporting the DBR Process

Identify neurofeedback approaches that may support Where-Self access, orienting tension, shock processing, and regulation of defensive states during different phases of DBR.

Timing & Sequencing Treatment

Distinguish when neurofeedback and DBR are best provided in the same session, in alternating sessions, or in sequential phases based on client state, readiness, and response.

Course at a Glance

Trauma treatment often requires clinicians to balance two needs: supporting sufficient nervous-system regulation and addressing the implicit survival responses that continue to organize present-day symptoms. This live, interactive course examines a state-responsive framework for integrating neurofeedback with Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR). The presentation distinguishes the clinical functions of the two modalities, reviews DBR's orienting-tension-shock-affect sequence, and considers how arousal dysregulation, defensive activation, dissociation, embodiment, and client readiness shape treatment planning.  Participants will examine assessment-informed rationales for posterior, sensorimotor, right-sided, midline, and network-focused neurofeedback approaches while maintaining a clear distinction between research findings and clinical hypotheses. Clinical vignettes illustrate when neurofeedback may precede DBR, follow DBR, occur within the same session, alternate across sessions, or remain a separate phase of care. Emphasis is placed on pacing, scope of competence, informed consent, immediate and delayed response monitoring, and adjustment when activation, collapse, or disconnection increases.  The course presents an integration framework rather than certification or foundational skills training in either modality.

”
I first met Dr. Goldberg as a practicum facilitator for DBR and later sought her out for individual consultation. Her thoughtful case conceptualization, attention to sequencing, and research-based skill have been invaluable. I’ve learned so much from her detailed knowledge of neurobiological processes and her ability to integrate them into moment-to-moment session work. The warmth and curiosity with which she shares her expertise make me look forward to every consultation."

Dr. Goldberg presented complex material in a thoughtful, organized manner. DBR is new to me but by the end of the lecture, I felt like I absorbed quite a bit of information.
